BLOOD PRESSURE - THAT WHICH HAS TO BE MONITORED ALWAYS

WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE:-
Heart pumps blood into the blood vessels, which in turn carry them to other parts of the body. Blood Pressure is the measure of the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls (arteries). If we have HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE  it puts more pressure o the heart, which works harder to supply blood which ultimately buttresses the arteries. This condition is called ARTERIOSCLEROSIS, which ends up in the collapse of the heart.
About one of every three adults in USA have high blood pressure. This when had for many years without medication leads to the impairment of the heart, arteries and kidneys. So one must know his/her blood pressure. If it reads normal then we can continue our normal activities, other-wise it is advisable to consult a doctor.
INSTRUMENT WHICH MEASURES B.P.:-
The instrument used to measure BP is called SPHYGMOMANOMETER / BLOOD PRESSURE METER. It consists of a inflatable cuff to restrict blood flow and a mercury manometer to measure the pressure. It is used together with a stethoscope to find out when the pressure blood flow starts and ends.

NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE :-
The BP reading has two numbers called SYSTOLIC & DIASTOLIC.  Systolic measures the amount of pressure that bloOd exerts on arteries and vessels while it is beating. Diastolic is the pressure that is exerted on the walls of the various arteries around the body in between heart beats when it is relaxed.
  • NORMAL                                         : 120/80 (young)   ; 140/90 (old).
  • PRE-HYPERTENSION                    : 120/90       over     139/89
  • STAGE 1 HIGH B.P.                        :  140/90       over     159/99
  • STAGE 2 HIGH B.P.                        : 160 & above    over    100 & above.
These are average ranges of blood pressure readings. It keeps changing depending on each individual and time of the day. It is lower in sleep and starts to rise when we wake-up. It rises when we get excited, nervous or active.
